FAQs

What’s an “Herbatergent”?
Herbatergent™ is a term invented by Vaska to describe our revolutionary formula, which uses real herbs and botanicals to do the cleaning, instead of traditional toxic laundry chemicals.
Do Vaska products contain toxins?
No. Two of our formulas have been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Design for the Environment (DfE) program because they are safe for the environment. The agency allows use of the DfE logo on products it has carefully screened, reviewing each ingredient for potential health and environmental effects. Based on currently available information, EPA predictive models, and expert judgment, the product contains only chemicals that pose the least concern among chemicals in their class.
Do you test Vaska products on animals?
Absolutely not. As part of a holistic approach to the environment, we oppose animal testing and believe it to be unnecessary and cruel.
Which products carry the DfE label?
Vaska Herbatergent Scent Free and Oxygenbleach meet the EPA’s rigorous standards and have earned the DfE label. Our other products are awaiting certification.
Can I recycle Vaska bottles?
Yes. Our bottles, made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), contain up to 50 percent post-consumer content and can be recycled in most cities.
What does the name Vaska mean?
Vaska means, “to wash” in Faroese (Old Norse) – “til dag ar vask dag” means, “today is wash day.” Swedes, most Norwegians, and Icelanders speak a modern version of Old Norse. Vaska founder Julia Fry grew up in Minnesota, and the Nordic culture there remains dear to her heart.
Are Vaska products compatible with graywater systems?
Yes. Vaska is safe to dispose of through graywater systems and septic tanks. The resulting effluent is harmless to plants and animals.
Does Herbatergent work in high-efficiency (HE) machines?
Yes. Vaska works equally well in both HE and conventional top-loading washing machines.
Can I use Herbatergent for washing delicates?
Yes. Vaska’s powerful yet gentle formula works well in cold water.
Is it safe for baby clothes?
Yes. Vaska formulas do not contain any skin irritants, dyes, or optical brighteners.
How much Vaska liquid detergent should I use for a load?
Use 1 capful (about 1.5 oz.) of the 2x (concentrated) formula to wash a typical load of laundry (10-15 pounds). For heavy soils, larger loads, towels, or hard water, add another ½ capful (a little less than .5 oz.).
